Full Account
During the early morning hours on a night in June 1961, two men working the night shift in Luton, Bedfordshire, witnessed an unusual figure on a nearby street.
Bert Fleckley, 65, and Jack Boutwood, 36, were both night-shift workers when they observed a female figure of considerable height — approximately six and a half feet tall — moving along the street. The figure was rather stout in build, dressed in a dazzling white robe, and had jet black hair.
Most strikingly, the figure appeared luminous and partially translucent. Rather than walking in the normal fashion, it glided smoothly above the ground, moving along the street without the usual motions of human locomotion.
Both men observed the figure for a sufficient period to agree on its details before it moved out of sight. Alarmed by what they had seen, they contacted the police. Officers arrived and conducted a search of the area but were unable to find any trace of the figure or any explanation for the sighting.
The case was documented in regional UFO and anomalous phenomena literature. The simultaneous observation by two independent adult witnesses is significant, and the police response — though yielding no results — provides a contemporaneous institutional record of the event.
The entity’s characteristics — luminous, translucent, robed, and gliding — are details that appear consistently across entity encounter reports from diverse cultures and time periods, though such features are also common in apparitional traditions. The case illustrates the difficulty of clean classification that many 1961 entity reports present.

Investigation Notes
Two independent adult witnesses — co-workers on a night shift — observed the same entity simultaneously. Police were called and conducted a search, adding an institutional response to the record. The entity's luminous, translucent quality and gliding motion are details reported across many entity encounter cases globally. The appearance as a robed female figure places this case at the intersection of entity encounter and apparitional traditions.
