Full Account

In the early morning hours of August 8, 1961, Charles Cummings was awakened in his home in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, by a sense of presence in the room. Opening his eyes, he saw two small beings standing in his bedroom.

The figures were between four and five feet tall and described as beautifully proportioned. They wore dark green two-piece suits with belts and glass helmets that had been pushed back from their faces. One of the beings had a receding hairline. Rather than walking, they appeared to glide across the floor.

As Cummings stirred, one of the beings spoke in English: “I think he’s waking up on us, we’d better go.” Both figures then vanished from the room, their departure accompanied by a hissing sound described as resembling air escaping from a pipe.

Cummings’ wife, who had also awakened during the encounter, confirmed seeing the two beings. She reported feeling paralyzed and unable to move or call out during their presence.

Approximately 250 meters away, neighbor Dr. Gerald Whitney independently witnessed a related phenomenon at the same time. Whitney observed a shiny bluish sphere approximately eight to nine meters in diameter rising slowly from a position directly in front of the Cummings residence. The sphere ascended gradually, then proceeded northward before disappearing from view.

The independent corroboration from Dr. Whitney — a physician with no prior connection to UFO claims — is considered one of the strongest aspects of this case. Neither witness had been subjected to hypnotic regression; both reported their observations from fully conscious memory.

Reported Effects

Physical: Both Cummings and his wife experienced temporary paralysis during the encounter
Psychological: Witness reported disorientation upon waking; wife felt unable to move or call out

Investigation Notes

Independent corroboration from a physician (Dr. Whitney) 250 meters away who saw the craft departing significantly strengthens this case. Both Cummings and his wife reported the entities without hypnotic regression — the memories were fully conscious. Published in Flying Saucer Review across multiple issues. The entities spoke English, an unusual detail for the period.
