Full Account

On the evening of September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill [img:betty-barney] were driving south on Route 3 through the White Mountains of New Hampshire [img:route3], returning from a vacation in Montreal. At approximately 10:00 PM, south of Lancaster, Betty noticed a bright light in the sky that appeared to be following their car.

Barney stopped the car several times to observe the object through binoculars. At one point, the object descended to within an estimated 100 feet of the vehicle, and Barney, walking across a field to get a closer look, observed a large disc-shaped craft with a double row of windows. Through the windows, he reported seeing humanoid figures operating controls. One being appeared to be the leader and communicated a message — Barney felt compelled to stay but instead broke away in terror and ran back to the car.

The couple drove away at high speed. They heard a series of rhythmic buzzing or beeping sounds that seemed to come from the trunk of the car, and they experienced a tingling drowsiness. The next conscious memory they had was of driving near Ashland, approximately 35 miles south — with two hours unaccounted for.

In the days following, Betty began having vivid, recurring nightmares about being taken aboard a craft by small beings with greyish skin and large, dark, wraparound eyes. The beings communicated telepathically and appeared to conduct medical examinations on both witnesses.

Troubled by the experience and the unexplained missing time, the Hills eventually sought the help of Dr. Benjamin Simon, a Boston psychiatrist who specialized in hypnotherapy. Over a series of sessions in 1964, conducted separately to prevent cross-contamination, both Betty and Barney described under hypnosis being taken aboard the craft and examined by the beings. [ref:1] Their accounts matched in significant details despite being given independently.

[quote:1|Barney Hill]“There were these men — I don’t want to say they were men. Their eyes continued around to the sides of their heads.”

During her hypnotic sessions, Betty described being shown a three-dimensional star map by the beings’ leader, indicating their home system and various trade and exploration routes. She later drew this map from memory. [img:star-map] In 1969, amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish constructed a three-dimensional model of nearby sun-like stars and identified a match to the Zeta Reticuli system, approximately 39 light-years from Earth.

The Hill case remains one of the most thoroughly investigated and influential cases in the study of entity encounters, having established many of the patterns later reported in subsequent abduction accounts. [ref:2]

Investigation History

Investigated by NICAP — Walter Webb conducted the initial interview on October 21, 1961; C.D. Jackson and Robert E. Hohmann conducted a follow-up November 25, 1961, during which they calculated a 7-hour trip duration for what should have taken 4 hours, revealing a larger time discrepancy than the Hills initially realized. Betty filed a report with USAF Project Blue Book the day after the encounter. Both witnesses underwent hypnotic regression with psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon (1964). Simon's professional opinion was that the abduction memories were fantasy, though he could not explain the matching details. Skeptics note that Barney's description of wraparound eyes came 12 days after 'The Bellero Shield' episode of The Outer Limits aired (Martin Kottmeyer analysis). Marjorie Fish's Zeta Reticuli star map identification has weakened with improved stellar data from the Hipparcos and Gaia missions. A New Hampshire historical marker was erected near Indian Head in 2011. The Hills' papers (1961-2006) are held at UNH Milne Special Collections. Kathleen Marden (Betty's niece) is the active custodian of the case evidence.
